The following information is about Ionosphere.
Ionosphere Defined
A region in the atmosphere above 50 kilometers from the surface where relatively large concentrations of ions and free electrons exist. The ionosphere is important for human communications because it re-directs AM radio transmissions. This process extends the distance that radio transmissions can travel.
This definition is in context to Physical Geography. See more contextual defintions for Ionosphere.

- Digital beacon receiver for ionospheric TEC measurement developed with GNU Radio: A simple digital receiver named ?GNU Radio Beacon Receiver (GRBR)? was developed for the satellitegroun d beacon experiment to measure the ionospheric total electron content (TEC). The open-source software toolkit for the software defined radio, GNU Radio, is utilized to realize the basic function of the receiver and perform fast signal processing. The software is written in Python for a LINUX PC. The open-source hardware called Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP), which best matches the GNU Radio, is used as a frontend to acquire the satellite beacon signals of 150 and 400 MHz. The first experiment was successful as results from GRBR showed very good agreement to those from the co-located analog beacon receiver. Detailed design information and software codes are open at the URL http://www.ris h.kyoto-u.ac.j p/digitalbeaco n/.

- Smithsonian Folkways - Recording Details: Did you know that the ionosphere makes noise? Or that that noise is actually possible to record? This recording shows that the ionosphere, part of the upper atmosphere that is ionized by solar radiation, can indeed be recorded. Here you have the opportunity to listen to the electrical static in stereo synchronized from recordings made at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC and at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Incidentally, this is a Cook classic, especially favored by DJs and spin artists
