- The Right to the City Conference Nov 6-8, 2008: Prospects for Critical Urban Theory and Practice The conference will focus on the meaning of the "right to the city" in the context of neoliberal urban restructuring. While the notion of "the right to the city" was popularized by Henri Lefebvre in the late 1960s, it has become something of a keyword among contemporary critical urban theorists for analyzing struggles to reappropriate urban space towards collective social uses under circumstances in which private capital and state institutions are dominating the urban process. It thus provides a focus for reflecting on the legacies and contemporary possibilities of critical urban theory, and exploring its relation to practice, in the context of early 21st century transformation s and struggles.

- The Technium: The Choice of Cities: "But today, as in the past, most of the mass movement toward cities ? the hundreds of millions per decade ? is led by settled people willing to pay the price of inconvenience and grime, living in a slum in order to gain opportunities and freedom. The poor move into the city for the same reason the rich move into the technological future ? to head towards possibilities and increased freedoms." ;

- Home Buyers Are Drawn to Nearby Organic Farms: At the 220-home Serenbe project near Atlanta?s airport, the cachet of local produce has been added to retiree-friend ly businesses, including galleries, a bed-and-breakf ast and three restaurants. Steve Nygren, an Atlanta restaurant impresario, started the project on his 900-acre farm. ?We preserved forest and pasture, and there were 20 acres left for an organic farm, and we also have a large wildflower meadow,? Mr. Nygren said. ?We?ve set up the design so 90 percent of the houses back up to one of those natural amenities. We are selling our lots at a premium that?s probably three times what the raw lot is.?
- Land hunger eats into Kenya?s fragile forest: The Mau forest was once a 400,000 hectare thicket of trees spread across the rolling hills of the southern Rift Valley, which captured rain water and funnelled it via aquifers into 12 rivers and five big lakes. But since the early 1990s nearly 30% of it has been destroyed by approximately 40,000 settlers who have cleared the cedar trees to make way for farm plots on which they grow wheat, cabbages and tomatoes. The result is reduced rain capture and weaker river-flow downstream ? effects compounded by droughts linked to global warming.
